For those of us living in South Africa we have a relatively new phenomena called Power Shedding where our power is purposefully cut according to some schedule so that the National Power Grid can rejuvenate itself or some crap like that.
For those of us running any business this has serious impact !
I can’t really do anything about the power cuts but I can show you how you can still have access to the internet even when there is no power. This tip also works for those of us who travel frequently and need internet on the go.
All you need is your laptop, an HTC phone and the USB cable (Bluetooth also works but we are keeping it simple for now).
What you do:
1. Grab your HTC phone, and make an internet connection (easiest way is to open a web browser and go to some site like http://www.ananzi.co.za or http://www.google.co.za/)
2. You phone will make the connection over 3G, EDGE or GPRS whichever is in your area and within your phone capability
3. Once connected, click on Start, select Programs, click on “Internet Sharing”, Select “connect with USB.” and click on “Activate”
4. Now simply connect your USB cable to your phone and to your laptop.
5. you are now connected to the net and can carry on working (Email, Web browsing etc.)
NOTE: You are using your cell phone package’s data rate. If you are going to be doing this permanently or on a more frequent basis, go see your service provider and see what add-on you can add to your package that will reduce the cost.
You might also find that you surfing via the HTC phone is FASTER than your ADSL if you happen to be in a an area that gets good wireless speed !
