The Vista Shutdown/ Restart/ Lock menu has been receiving allot of Grief ! It seems like people don’t really want to have to click several times, find those little icons just to shut down their pc. “Surely there is another way ?”
Yes there is - in the interest of helping Vista (Note to Microsoft: do I get commission on sales ?) follow these steps and you can create Shortcuts right on your desktop to do the same thing (but with bigger nicer icons) !
Lets start -
1. Right-click on your desktop, select New and then Shortcut
![]()
2. You will now need to enter the command that you would like in the shortcut location box [copy and paste ONLY the BOLDED text below]:
-
-
To Lock Computer type: Rundll32.exe User32.dll,LockWorkStation
-
To Shutdown Computer type: Shutdown.exe -s -t 00
-
To Restart Computer type: Shutdown.exe -r -t 00
-
To Hibernate Computer type: Rundll32.exe PowrProf.dll,SetSuspendState
-
To Sleep Computer type: Rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,SetSuspendState Sleep
-
![]()
3. Click next and enter the name of the shortcut which I would suggest is the same function ie. Shutdown Computer etc.
![]()
4. Click Finish and you will have your Shortcut done !

If you are like me and want the desktop to be pretty then carry on reading:
I don’t want have the default icon for my shortcuts, so I changed them by simply Right-click on the icon and choose properties, click on Change Icon, Select a new icon and click on OK
This is simple and effective !
